What are crow’s feet?

Crow’s feet are wrinkles at the outside corners of the eyes. Medically they are called lateral canthal rhytids. They are driven by the orbicularis oculi, the ring of muscle around each eye that contracts every time you blink, squint, or smile.

All wrinkles start out as dynamic lines, meaning they only appear when you move. Over time and with enough repetition, dynamic lines become static, meaning they are there even when the face is at rest. Repeated muscle movement also thins the overlying skin and the tissue underneath it, which is why crow’s feet tend to get more visible with age. Sun exposure, dullness, and pigmentation on top of that make them look deeper than they are.

Why does the eye area age first?

The skin here is the thinnest on the body

Eyelid skin is less than one millimetre thick and has no fat layer underneath. That makes it more reactive to UV, irritation, and general life, and quicker to show change than the rest of the face.

Fewer oil glands, less collagen

Compared with the rest of the face, the skin around the eyes has fewer oil glands and less collagen. That translates to fine lines, dehydration, dullness, and looser skin sooner.

Constant movement

The orbicularis oculi contracts every time you blink or make a facial expression. That is thousands of movements a day folding the same delicate skin.

Skincare skips this area

Most people apply their serums and moisturisers everywhere except the orbital area. Over years, that leaves the eye area with less UV and antioxidant protection than the rest of the face.

The four patterns of crow’s feet

Not all crow’s feet fan out the same way. Clinically they are usually grouped into four patterns: full (lines fan out in all directions), lower (mostly below the outer eye corner), upper (mostly above it), and lateral (staying tight around the outer corner without spreading). Knowing the pattern helps guide what will and will not make a visible difference.

Step one: get the skincare right

Do not focus only on the lines. Dull, dehydrated eye-area skin ages the face all on its own. The ingredients that work on the rest of the face still work here: retinal (vitamin A), L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides. Bring your usual serums right up to the orbital bone, avoiding the lash line.

A retinal (vitamin A)

Retinaldehyde is the most effective and best tolerated over-the-counter form of vitamin A, roughly 20 times more powerful than retinol. It smooths, evens tone, and speeds up skin cell turnover, all of which softens the look of fine lines.

A vitamin C

L-ascorbic acid is an antioxidant, brightens dull skin, and supports collagen. If sun damage is part of your crow’s feet story (it usually is), this is one of the highest-value additions to a morning routine.

Niacinamide for barrier support

Niacinamide strengthens the skin barrier, reduces trans-epidermal water loss, and calms inflammation. Thin eye-area skin benefits from all three.

Step two: the dedicated eye serum

A well-formulated eye serum layers the same evidence-based ingredients into a texture designed for the delicate skin around the eyes. Caffeine is worth calling out: it constricts small blood vessels (so there is less fluid pooling under the eye), stimulates circulation, and is a genuine antioxidant that helps protect the skin against UV damage.

Step three: daily sunscreen and sunglasses

The most-skipped, highest-leverage anti-crow’s-feet move. Broad-spectrum sunscreen, applied all the way up to the lash line, and a good pair of wraparound sunglasses. Sunglasses stop you squinting (which drives the muscle movement) and lower the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and skin cancers on the eyelids. Zinc oxide is a great mineral option because it is non-comedogenic and gentle on eye-area skin.

Step four: dissolving microneedle patches

The evidence for at-home dissolving microneedle patches around the eyes is genuinely good. Hyaluronic acid microneedles create tiny channels in the skin that trigger a healing cascade, including new collagen and elastin, while also delivering hyaluronic acid straight past the barrier. A Korean study using hyaluronic acid microneedle patches twice weekly for eight weeks reported significant reductions in wrinkles and improvement in skin elasticity.

Hyaluronic acid is well tolerated, low-irritation, and safe to use around the eyes, which is where older metal microneedle devices tend to struggle.
